Last week director Amanda rendered assistant director Mary (almost) speechless by reminding her she had been working for GEO London for TEN YEARS and presenting her with an engraved plaque!

Mary was surprised and delighted and explained to the assembled students and faculty that ten years has flown by because every programme and group of students is unique, so it’s impossible to get bored!

In case it’s not obvious, Amanda and Mary love their jobs, especially facilitating the often life-changing and transformative opportunities afforded by students living and studying in a different country through study abroad. They also get to share their academic passions and love for the best city in the world (that’s London btw)!

Thank you British weather for a bit of a soggy end to such a bright and sunny programme! 😆

Yesterday we took a 2-hour Thames river cruise to say farewell to our plucky group of pandemic pioneers/guineapigs! We knew we could run a programme safely (so many risk assessments!), but were understandably rather trepidatious about it! We are delighted to say it went even better than we could have hoped for and much of that is down to a wonderful bunch of students and our amazing faculty. Thank you all for helping us make this happen and paving the way for lots more programmes and student opportunities in 2021.

Speaking of which: we are really excited to meet another group in just over a week! Study abroad is definitely back and we are DELIGHTED! 🥳

Even if you’re not taking a theatre class, you’ll get to see at least one live performance as part of your chosen programme 👌🎭

(Usually phones/filming are not allowed as it distracts the performers, but this finale was much more like a music gig and the audience was encouraged to join in! Also, till further restrictions are lifted in the U.K. all theatre performances are socially distanced, hence the empty seats and really good sight line!)

Serenity interned with Make Happy, a creative facilitation and innovation consultancy based in London. She spent the quarter assisting with workshops, research, copywriting, and developing marketing content, all while taking classes at UO. History is everywhere, even when you’re studying

History is everywhere, even when you’re studying psychology! We do post an awful lot about history, but it’s not because we’re nostalgic or love the past! Perhaps quite the contrary…

Last week the psychopathology class went to the Museum of the Mind in south London. It is dedicated to the history of Bethlem Royal Hospital, founded in the 13th century as a London asylum and now a modern psychiatric facility. The museum also features artwork by current or former patients, as well as a pair of statues from the 17th century site’s entrance called ‘Raving and Melancholy Madness’.

While museums and other historical places of interest are often fun to visit, it’s important to keep in mind that past centuries were pretty awful for the average person and even worse for those who were vulnerable. Places like this demonstrate how far society has come and encourages us to keep learning from the past as we move forward!

A visit to the Tower of London is a must as it mir

A visit to the Tower of London is a must as it mirrors the history of the city itself from a Roman settlement in AD43, through centuries of royal and military shenanigans, right up to the present day. We saw the Crown Jewels, Anne Boleyn’s grave (and execution site! 😬), Traitors Gate, the Bloody Tower, the White Tower, the battlements, the yeoman warders (aka beefeaters) and of course the famous resident ravens! We even had time for an ice cream (we’re having a heatwave in London, honest!) 🍦☀️

Piccadilly Circus on a fine sunny morning!

How did it get its (weird) name? 🤔 Well! Piccadilly comes from the word ‘piccadill’, which was a kind of lace-edged Elizabethan collar. A local tailor, Robert Baker, made so much money from selling these clothing items that he was able to build himself a posh mansion just north of where this photo was taken, which was informally known as ‘Pikadilly Hall’, and after a while the street assumed this name too. And circus? Was this the site of a big top full of performing lions and acrobats? Sadly not! Circus comes from the Latin word for circle - i.e. it’s just a plain ol’ roundabout!

And what’s the statue, I hear you cry? Commonly (and wrongly) known as Eros, this is in fact Anteros, the Greek god of unconditional and selfless love. The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, as the whole piece is known, was built in 1893 to commemorate Victorian Tory politician and philanthropist Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, for his tireless work in getting children out of the workhouses and chimneys and into schools.

It’s so good to be back inside an art gallery! 💫🎨🖼 Founded in 1824, the National Gallery houses hundreds of paintings from the mid-fourteenth century to 1900. Due to social distancing they are operating three discrete routes and we opted for route b, which included works by Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Picasso, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner, Caravaggio and many many more! Even if students aren’t taking liberal arts subjects in London we think it’s really important to experience all this amazing city has to offer so we will always encourage (or drag!) them to visit theatres, galleries and museums wherever possible. Oh and did we mention that, unlike most other European countries, major U.K. gallery admission is free? 😎

Shakespeare’s Globe is back! Last night students watched A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the iconic reconstruction Elizabethan theatre, one day after it reopened post-lockdown, and the atmosphere was electric! We’re so excited that theatres are open again as they are such a huge part of london life, and indeed our programmes! Till restrictions are lifted in England audiences must wear masks, stay in their seats and mix only with their immediate group (our students live together as a ‘bubble’ so are able to mingle freely).

Last week students headed down to south west London to visit Kew Gardens, all 330 stunning acres of it! They saw the great pagoda, various magnificent Victorian glass houses, the cute little palace, the treetop walkway...and thousands of beautiful plants and flowers! Kew Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts the largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world - and it’s only 10 miles from the hustle and bustle of central London! 🌱🌿🌺🌹🌷🌻🌼🍄🌳🌴⛲️

Big Brother is watching you! 👀
Only joking, it’s just Amanda and Mary testing out the AV tech before our in-person indoor classes resumed this afternoon - it’s been over a year (so long that Mary couldn’t remember the wifi password 😆)!
A few more national restrictions were lifted today - we can now eat indoors in restaurants, stay overnight at someone else’s house and go to museums and galleries and theatres (all socially distanced etc)! British universities have resumed in-person teaching which means we can too and it was soooooo lovely to have students in the building again. It’s too quiet without yooooou!

After a few tours around the posher parts of london over the last few days (we are not obsessed with the queen, honestly!), we thought we’d better balance that out with a trip to the East End. Known locally as Curry Mile due to the dozens of Bangladeshi eateries, Brick Lane is a real palimpsest of culture and society. Amanda pointed out lots of political street art, discussed the impact of gentrification, talked about the varied history of the area, and bought them each a beigel (aka bagel 🥯) at the famous 24-hour Jewish bakery, Beigel Bake.

Stocking up on tea and biscuits in Fortnum and Mason for that much needed Monday boost! ☕️🫖🍪

F&M was established in 1707 by William Fortnum and his landlord Hugh Mason. The former pocketed half-used candles from his employer (Queen Anne!), melting them down and selling them on - enterprising, and funny to think that a high end department store boasting two royal warrants should have grown out of stealing from the monarchy it now supplies!

Our spring students throwing their O at the Wellington Arch. And who’s that on top riding the quadriga (ancient 4-horse chariot)? Why it’s Greek goddess of victory Nike of course - could it be more perfect? 😎 #throwyouro #universityoforegon

The arch itself was designed by Decimus Burton at the behest of King George IV to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. It originally supported a colossal 40 ton bronze statue of Wellington astride his horse, the largest equestrian statue ever made, and considered an ungainly eyesore by pretty much anyone who saw it! In fact, foreign visitors described it as “spectacular confirmation [of the] artistic ignorance of the English" - charming! 😆 The original statue was eventually replaced with Nike in 1912 and makes a much better @uoregon photo op! 😎🦆

Another sunny spring day in London!We went on a walking tour of Piccadilly this morning and decided to take a detour via Buckingham Palace, and what a good decision that was! In the space of 10 minutes we saw the changing of the guard, a Household Cavalry practice parade, and the arrival of Catholic bishop Claudio Gugerotti in a fancy carriage! Sometimes you’re just in the right place at the right time to witness some kinda ridiculous full-on British pomp! 👑🏰💂‍♀️🎺

What a beautiful day to spend by the River Thames! ☀️😎

Today our spring students went on a history walking tour with Mary: starting on London Bridge, heading south of the river to the George Inn, Southwark Cathedral, Winchester Palace, the Clink, Shakespeare’s Globe, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge...[breathe] and a slap up street food lunch at Borough Market! (That’s nearly 8,000 steps, if you’re interested!)

Aside from the more well-known facts, the group learned about the Winchester Geese, the burial of Mohegan tribesman Sachem Mahomet Weyonomon, and the cathedral’s Doorkins Magnificat! 🤓

It’s wonderful to see London opening up and to share the experience with our lovely students! 💫

They’re here, they’re here! 🥳

These 5 plucky students stuck with us through months of ups and downs and “will it or won’t it run?”, plus 10 days of quarantine once they got here. Today they experienced their first day out and about in sunny London, and their first stop? The GEO Centre of course! Amanda and Mary couldn’t be more excited to welcome them IRL (Mary even wore UO colours by accident! 😆)

The group is one single household, so they may socialise freely, but of course Amanda and Mary have to keep their distance (and face coverings and regular hand-washing are a must). It was quite difficult to resist hugging each other after a year of no students!
