Mary accidentally watched the London Marathon on her way to an antiques fair yesterday afternoon - generally speaking she prefers looking at old wooden objects than being a spectator of sport events, but how cool to just stumble upon such an iconic world-famous event without even trying. Our Health, Cognition and Wellbeing class attended

Our Health, Cognition and Wellbeing class attended a lecture at the @roysocmed last week with their prof, Dr Antonio Fidalgo. ‘Medicine and the Media’ was led by medical journalist, TV personality and practising NHS physician, Dr Hilary Jones and explored how health information is “disseminated, interpreted, and sometimes misunderstood by the public”. A subject that will never not be interesting and relevant!

🚨 Some more important news (even more so than Amanda’s mum’s woolly jumper, one might argue): we have a new programmes coordinator! 🚨

Daniel Stratford joined the team towards the end of last month and is settling in splendidly. He has a BA in business and Spanish, a Masters in international business and even spent a year studying abroad in South Carolina, so knows firsthand how it feels to be out of your comfort zone in an unfamiliar country, albeit back-to-front! He also loves travelling and supporting his local football team @watfordfcofficial! Welcome Daniel 🥳

But of course, “in with the new” often means “out with the old”, so to speak! Noemie said farewell to GEO at the end of January and has moved on to a well-deserved promotion in pastures new at @imperialcollege. Farewell Noémie - come back and see us soon (preferably with some of your amazing homemade bread! 😆)

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye!

Just like that, another semester comes to a close. We had such a wonderful time getting to know our Liberal Arts & Gender, Race and Social Justice students this fall. To celebrate the end of the programme, the students and faculty headed to Bond Street hotel for a tasty afternoon tea. Amanda made a speech, Noémie and Mary took selfies and all debated which was the best way to have a scone! All in all, a jolly good time was had.

We know our students are going on to do amazing things but we hope they'll stop by the Centre to say hello if ever they're back in London 😭👋

Noémie and @susanshaw1960 had such a good time at the panto last week that they forgot the students were also there 😆

Pantomime is a big part of the British festive period. It involves a cheeky reimagining of a classic fairytale, a dame and lots of audience participation.

They took the students to @hackneyempire to see Aladdin and they had a great time. Congrats to the cast and crew for such a fun and memorable show!

This week we hosted The Great GEO Bake Off, inviting our lovely professor Andrew and special guest @chamonixaspen to judge the bakes. The students did a wonderful job, introducing us Brits to snickerdoodles and strawberry shortcake!

It was a delight to welcome @chamonixaspen to the GEO Centre to host a drag workshop for the Queer London class. As well as lip-synching and choosing their drag names, the students learnt about the history of drag and what it's like to work in drag today!

Some of you might not know that we run a FULLY FUNDED 4-week programme in London over the summer. London in a Global Context includes all the usual stuff (tuition, housing, insurance, course materials, etc) AND stipends to cover flights AND spending money 🤯 We’ve run it for 2 years now and we can hardly believe it ourselves! Celena and I ran an info session on campus yesterday, but honestly our amazing alumni did all the work! They spoke about how to budget the stipend, how they dealt with personal challenges, how they booked their flights…and confirmed that although this programme sounds too good to be true and there must be a catch, it is legit and there are no hidden extras! It’s covered by donations so will not affect any of your AY scholarships. If you’re a @pathwayoregon student in your freshman year, head to the @geoabroad website for more information. Applications are open now and the hard deadline is 15 February 2024.

Okay that’s the hard sell done…

My visit neatly coincided with the @nafsaregion1 conference in Eugene earlier this week, so Ben (from @geoabroad), Celena (from @pathwayoregon) and I gave a presentation about the aforementioned programme. Our slot happened to fall on Halloween, hence the very serious and professional costumes 🍌🦇

GEO London alums - @uportland edition!

I may have spent the majority of my week in eugene doing @uoregon things, but GEO in London works with soooo many students from all over the PNW, so I was thrilled to squeeze in a day trip to Portland to see how our lovely pilots are doing! We held a pre-departure orientation for our spring semester 2024 students, as well as an info session for students interested in London programmes more generally. We also had (delicious) coffee and chat with the utterly fab Holly and Jen from the @upstudyabroad office. Which just about left enough time to catch up with our alums from spring 2023! A whistle stop tour indeed! 🌪️

Next time the PNW gets a visit from GEO London staff, we hope to integrate some more partner university visits and study abroad fairs.

Not only did our fall semester students immerse themselves in the culture of the British pub quiz, they also learnt such trivia facts as….a Brazil nut is actually a seed, Joe Biden’s dog is called Commander, Emma Stone is not a natural redhead 🤯 oh, and Keith really doesn’t like American-style beer 😆

Big thanks to Noemie for writing and asking the questions, Keith for his guest round as Quiz Master General™️, staff and faculty (and Mary’s husband!) for joining in, and all the students for being awesome as usual. Especially the winning team ‘Half a Dozen Royal Beheaders’! 🥳🏆
